What the specification actually fixes
Size and weight are narrow. Every regulation bag lands in the same 6 by 6 inch, 15.5 to 16.5 ounce window, which means marketing claims about a bag being heavier or larger are either about feel or about a non-regulation product.
What varies is everything the rule does not specify: what is inside the bag, what the two faces are made of, and how the seam is built. Those three things account for how a bag behaves when it lands.

Fill material
Whole corn is the traditional fill. It absorbs moisture, can sprout or rot if stored damp, and changes weight with humidity, which is why bags approved for sanctioned play have largely moved to synthetic fills. Resin pellets are the common alternative and hold weight consistently across conditions.
Fill also determines how a bag conforms. A bag that flattens on impact grabs the surface and stops; a bag that stays rounder carries momentum and keeps sliding. Pellet size and how full the bag is packed both feed into that behavior.
Dual-sided fabric
Dual-sided bags pair a slower face with a faster one. Try the slower fabric for a controlled stop and the faster fabric for a longer slide; the surface and your delivery affect the result.
Fabric labels vary between manufacturers and there is no shared industry scale for speed. A bag rated 5/7 by one maker is not directly comparable to a 5/7 from another, so treat published speed numbers as within-brand ordering rather than an absolute measurement.
Construction and durability
Stitching is where bags fail. Double-stitched seams and reinforced corners last longer under repeated impact, and bags that are edge-stitched tightly hold a squarer shape over time than loosely finished ones.
Bag condition drifts with use. Fabric polishes smooth as it wears, which speeds up the slow side and narrows the difference between the two faces. Serious players retire sets on a schedule for that reason rather than waiting for a seam to open.

Can I compare speed ratings across brands?
Not reliably. Speed numbers are set by each manufacturer with no common scale, so they order bags within a brand's own lineup rather than across the market.
