How the graphic gets on the board

Vinyl wraps are applied as a printed sheet across the top. They produce sharp full-coverage artwork and a uniform surface, and they can lift at the edges or around the hole if the edges are not sealed well.

Direct print puts ink onto the prepared surface, then a clear coat goes over it. Stain and paint work, including stencils and hand-painted logos, is the third route and gives the most control over how much of the wood grain shows.

Surface finish and play

Customization changes how the board plays. A wrap and a clear-coated print will not have identical friction, so ordering two boards from different processes or different shops gives you a mismatched pair.

Ask what the final coat is and how many coats are applied. If you want a faster surface, say so during ordering, since finish is easier to specify up front than to change afterward.

Artwork you need to supply

Ask the supplier for its artwork template, bleed area and resolution requirements. A small web logo can look soft when enlarged across a board; send the original artwork file when available.

Keep important artwork clear of the hole. Its center is 9 inches from the back edge and the opening is 6 inches across; a bag on the board can obscure nearby text.

Licensing and lead time

Team logos, university marks, and commercial characters are licensed. Shops that offer them are working under a license, and a shop that will print any logo you send may be leaving the rights question with you.

Custom work runs longer than stock inventory because of art proofing and finishing time. If boards are for a specific event, ask for the proof deadline rather than only the ship date.

A few common questions

Does a vinyl wrap make the board slower or faster?

It changes the surface, and the direction depends on the specific vinyl and any coating over it. Order both boards of a pair with the same process so the two ends of the lane match.

Can I have any logo printed?

Licensed marks belong to their owners, and a shop that prints anything sent to it is not clearing those rights for you. For a team or business logo you own, supply vector art sized for a 48 by 24 inch surface.
